Sri Lankan family adventures

The Sri Lanka family holiday is specially designed with kids in mind. Including a lot more interesting activities along the way this tour combines the comforts of the grand tour while providing ample activities for the kids.

The holiday begins in the cultural triangle and visit Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya. We then travel to Kandy where we visit the elephant orphanage and the temple of the tooth. Traveling onwards we visit Nuwara Eliya and trek through the Horton Plains National Park. We then experience a thrill like no other whitewater rafting through grade 2 and 3 rapids.

Traveling onwards we visit the Yala National Park where if lucky you will see the Leopard. Finally arrive at your family beach resort for three nights. This resort while being family oriented also offers spa facilities. The hotel has access to its own marina as well.

Itinerary in detail

Day 01: Colombo
On your arrival in Sri Lanka you will be met at the airport by your chauffeur and transferred to Colombo. During the 60 minute journey from the airport you can catch a glimpse of Sri Lankan life.

Throngs of street vendors, tuk-tuks weaving crazily about in traffic, 60 seater busses that always seem come right at you are all part of the sights and sounds that would greet you on your way.

Upon arrival at the Galle Face Hotel, you can rest, relax and recover from jetlag. We will host you to a complimentary dinner in the evening. During this dinner we will answer all your questions regarding the tour and also familiarize you with general information.

Depart to Dambulla after breakfast. Arrive towards late morning or early afternoon at your destination.

Visit the Sigiriya rock fortress in the afternoon. This 200m high world heritage site is home to the famous frescos. Return to the hotel and spend the rest of the evening at leisure

Day 03: Polonnaruwa
After an early breakfast depart to explore ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Hire bikes and set off to explore the ancient city.

Polonnaruwa was the second capital of the Kingdom of Ceylon from the 11th to the 13th Century AD. The most famous site of Polonnaruwa is the Gal Viharaya which consists of Granite statues of Lord Buddha in the meditation, standing and passing away postures.

Experience a safari on elephant back to the Habarana Tank. Return to Dambulla towards evening and relax. 

Day 04: Kandy
Depart to Kandy after breakfast. En route visit the spice gardens of Matale and be guided through a spice garden.

Arriving towards afternoon proceed to the Peradeniya Gardens. This botanical garden is home to a wide variety of plants and trees. The orchids at this garden are particularly worth seeing.

Towards evening proceed to witness a cultural show. The show features drummers, dancers and firewalkers. Spend the night in Kandy.

Day 05: Kandy
Kandy was the last capital of Sri Lanka and was home to the last king of Sri Lanka Sri Wickrama Rajasingha.

Today you may relax and rest at the pool or visit the Kandy town to explore the many sites on offer. The most famous site is the Temple of the Tooth or the Dalada Maligawa.

Day 06: Kitulgala
Depart to Kitulagala. This little town on the Nuwara Eliya road offers some great whitewater rafting opportunities. Arrive at Kitulagala towards late morning and after lunch proceed with the whitewater rafting.

The course offers 7 rapids of generally grade 2 – 3 and is great fun. Arrive back at the eco lodges 2 hrs later and spend the night relaxing listening to the river rushing by your eco lodge.

Day 07: Nuwara Eliya
The next day we leave Kitulgala and proceed towards Nuwara Eliya. The drive to Nuwara Eliya is spectacular with mist covered mountains, lush tea estates and tea pluckers.

Arrive in Nuwara Eliya towards afternoon. You may spend the rest of the day at leisure or walk around and explore the town on your own.

Situated at an altitude of 2040m this town with its characteristic British architecture and climate is very popular with locals who want to escape the heat of Colombo, so surprise this town is known as “little England” 

Day 08: Horton Plains
You will be met by our horticulturalist at the hotel and together set off to Horton Plains. The Horton Plains is a high altitude bio system that is home to some unique fauna and flora. The highlight of this nature reserve is the worlds end. A sheer cliff face of 880m the views from it on a clear day are mind-boggling. You can even see the Indian Ocean 50km away.

After arriving back at the gates proceed onwards to Ella where you will spend the next 2 nights.

Ella offers some great views and lots of optional activities for everyone. From abseiling to trekking this adventure park and hotel offers it all.

Rest and relax or experience the many optional activities available.

Day 11: Yala
Leave the hill country and travel towards the dry zone. This part of our journey will take us through some of Sri Lanka’s most scenic locations. Its mostly steep decent right throughout the trip but the views compensate for this.

We are now entering prime elephant territory and you may see the occasional elephant munching away by the roadside separated only by an electric fence. Rest and relax for the rest of the day. 

Day 12: Yala
Yala is Sri Lanka’s second largest wildlife park and has the largest population of Leopard in Sri Lanka. Yala is famed for its leopard population of 35 and considered to be one of the best places in the world to observe and photograph Leopard.

We proceed to the park after a very early breakfast to enter early. Morning inside the park is the ideal time to see a variety of animals including the elusive leopard. We return to the hotel where we spend the rest of the day at leisure. You may optionally visit the park again in the afternoon.

Day 13: Beruwela
We depart to our final destination after breakfast. Traveling along the coastal road you may notice some of the devastation caused by the tsunami. You will also see how towns and villages are rebuilding and moving on with lives.
 
Near Weligama you will see the stilt fisherman (season based). These fishermen stand patiently on stilts and fish for their daily catch. The stilts themselves are passed from father to son.

Traveling onwards we arrive in Galle. Here we visit the Fort complex. This world heritage site 16th century Portuguese fort reached the height of its development in the 18th century.

After visiting the fort we travel onwards to arrive at the beach resort for the next three nights.

Day 14 and 15: Beruwela
The beautiful resort and spa which you will spend the next few days in offers some great facilities. Relax by the pool or sample of the invigorating therapies this luxurious 5 star resort and spa offers. You can also visit the Marina a haven for water sports just a few minutes away.

Day 16: Colombo
We leave for Colombo after breakfast and visit the many clothing shops and souvenir boutiques. Designer labels are very cheap here and guests can buy anything from t-shirts to Parkas. We also visit some Handicraft shops and Jewellery stores.

Overnight in Colombo.

Day 15:
Depart to the airport after breakfast for your flight out.
